The number of bales catalogued was 270,000, of which 5000 were withdrawn. HARVEST. Tbe Engliah harvest is almost completed. WHEAT. The wheat market is weak, and common sorts are Gd. cheaper. Australian and New Zealand shipments are depressed. COMPANIES. It is reported that a company to purchase the Cumberland mine on the Ethendage goldfield, Queensland, will bo floated shortly with a capital of Ll 80,000. A company to purchase the Livingstone mine at Charters Towers is ia the market for L 75.000. The Canadian mine m the same district is offered for L 70.006. DJD NOT PAY. The trip of the Australian cricketers has not been a financial success. BEACH AND HANLAN. Beach and Hanlan are reconciled. PAYING WELL. The Bank of South Australia has declared a dividend of 6 per cent, and a considerable amount has been carried forward to provide for doubtful debts. IMPERIAL INSTITUTE. Sir P. Cunliffe Owen states that the annual payments of tbe colonies towards tbe Imperial Institute will depend upon the number of members who contribute. BISHOP OF MELBOURNE. The rev. gentleman who has accepted the Bishopric of Melbourne is possessed of large private means and is a very eloquent preacher. He is a very generous man, aud has expended among the poor of his congregation the whole of his stipend. The curates of the diocese of St. George's Chnrch, to which the new Bishop was rector, are of opinion that he is highly pleased with the appointment. WOOD TESTING. A series of meetings of experts is being arranged tc practically te3t the quality of the various wood exhibits at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, and the first trial will be made at the works of Messrs Ransome, Sims and Co., Chelsea. CONFERENCE. Mr J. Norton, delegate of the Sydney Trade and Labour Council, is organising a conference on the subject of State aided emigration, and bas invited delegates from all the avtizans' societies to be present.
