THE NATIVE MINISTER AND THE MAORIS.

♦ (By Telegraph.) Wellington, April 16. The Hon. M. Ballanco had an interview willi Tawhaio and Major Te Wheoro this morning at Alexandra. Kewi and Wipere, M.H.B.'b, were present also according to arrangement. Tawhaia seemed anxious to come to terms and was very friendly. He wished that matters of road survey and land court at Mawhaio and Aotea should stand over for a short time until, he and Mr Ballance had further talk on the matter Mr Ballance said he had no objection to a short postponement. It may be stated that all works immediately I wanted m the district have already been completed. ; Tawhaio asked that a Maori Council should be appointed. On this thero was a Jong discussion and Mr Ballance said that if a council was wanted they should themselves introduce a Bill for that purpose. Mr Ballance said he would consult bis colleagues aa to a Maori Council after the model of the one at A Koahimarama, m 1860, but that was a matter whioh would have to .be considered by his colleagues. Personally he did not see much objection to that.
