SHOOTING.
COMPETITION FOR MR GREEN'S CUP. . The members of the Timaru riflo corps fired for Mr 0. Green's Cup yesterday afternoon at the range, Saltwater Creek. The ranges were 200, 400 and 600 yards; five shotaateach'j sighters allowed; Wimbledon targets and scoring. The afternoon was a. beautiful onq, and was ■ altogether favorable for shooting, what little, wind there was, blowing .from the left rear. Lieutenant Ferguson was m charge of the range: ; Quartermaster-Sergeant King kept tho register, and Corporal Waugh, with an assistant^ did duty: m the markers' butt. The "possible" "at.: each .range was 25 points, J.and as the weather was so good, it ;. was. fully] expected that some of the competitors •■, would put on all r'f bulls". at. more than one of the ranges. This, however, was not done. Private Bowley, as ' usual, kept very close to the small oirole«f black, and at the 200 got 22 points, repeating' the performance at yards, amidst applause. . Lieutenant Ferguson came neit -with the splendid, score of 41, one point over inne'rs, and cloßely pressing .him came Private A. Pearson, a young rifleman and one who gives promise of eventually becoming one of the orack shots of the garrison district, with an' even score of' inners. ■ Following Private Pearson came" Privates Warrington, and Henderson arid Corporal ,Gunn, the former, 39 points and the f'wb latter 38 eachi' ; Oii concluding the firing aj; the 400 yds range,' it .was, decided, (m face os. the -large number of men yejr.to fire, and the fact that the shades of evening were fast closing m, not to finish
the contest thai; evening. We do not desire to find fault with tho management for coming to this decision, but it seems to us a great pity the contest was not concluded. Following timo honored precedent those men who had no " show " should havo teen counted out, and, say, the ten highest scorers left to finish the match. Had this been done it would to our mind havo given satisfaction to the majority of competitors. The following are tho full scores so far : — Total : 200 400 10 yards, yards, shots.
