WORLD'S DAT OF REST.
Mr Luis Jackson, of Chicago, proposes the formation of a World's Day of Rest League. He claims, from a practical study of tho subject that human rapacity is becoming bo great that unless tbo working men of all denominations takes measures to preserve a uniform day of rest they may lose it altogether. He desires tho League to bo untrammeled by any question of particular belief, simply advocating that which he believes was the original und humane intent m Mosaism — namely, tho guaranteeing to labor a day of reat. He has already proposed to his Jewish brethren, on the broad claims of humanity, from prudential motives, and m the interest of Jewish artisans, tl:at at a convention of representative Jews from all parts of the world to bo held m Paris m tho year 1900, the Jewish Sabbath bo transferred to the National Day of Rest by authoritative edict. He fully believes that when this measure is piously considered by his coreligionists, they will make tho sacrilice of transferring their enbb:ith, thus, m his opinion, recording on tho imperishable tablet of chronology the benevolent and influential notion of an ancient Church, still vigorous m the cause of civilisation. Mr Jackson further claims that although modern ideas aro changing the nspects of beliefs, it is neither intended nor desirablo that practical benefits, such as a day of rest, conferred by religious systems, be destroyed m tho goneral demolition. He thereforo believes that all would willingly unite on thi3 common platform. It is intended to form an international committee m tho above interest as soon as practicable.
