TEE OYSTER TRADE.
(By Telegraph.) Wellington, March 25._ The Gazette to-day contains an Order-in - Council prohibiting the exportation of rock oysters, and extending the close season till March, 1889, for Hauraki Gulf and the Coast botween and including the Bay of Islands to Bream Head near Whangarei. It was not intended to closo tho Bay of Islands, but recent examination has shown that if it is not done, the oysters would bo exterminated. A few years ago thoy were thickly sownalpng all the islets and coasts of tho above districts, but they have been gathered with such recklessness and vigor as to nearly denude the sea shore. In some places the oysters ' were shovelled up with spades indiscriminately, rooks and all, and sent off m shiploads at a timo. It is possiblo that the use of spades will bo prohibited altogether, and dealors made to collect their prey m a moro scientific manner.
