THE DESTITUTE CHARITABLE AID DEPARTMENT.

♦ 1 here are at proscnfc thirteen children and two women under tlie care of Mr and Mrs Sabiston m the Immigration Barracks. From an inspection of the Barracks, wo are satisfied that no pains are spared to make the inmates as comfortable as possiblo. Tho great point, however, ia that Mr and Mrs Sabiston try m every way to have a good examples set those unfortunates who are placed under their care, and there is little doubt m many instances they are amply rewarded for their trouble They go out of their way to find inmates employment m private houses, or their children work m shops m town. While m tho Barracks a careful watch is kept over them so that there can bo no complaint about thoir behaviour. We do not mean by this that all admitted require watching, for many are driven to seek an asylum there by real distress— distress which they havo no means of providing against. There are others, though, who need watching and attendance so that when they again go forth they may bo able to gain a livelihood without fear of being looked upon with suspicion. For the now Btart they make they havo not a little to thank tho Madly master and matron -who do their best to brighten them up and mako thorn look with cheerful hearts and plenty of hopo to better times to come. All who have had, during the last few days, while the volunteers have been m camp, an opportunity of seeing what is done m the Barracks, have expressed themselves highly

pleased with them, the inmates, young or old, expressing m unmistakeable language that they feel themselves m every way at home. Whether admitted for a day or a week or a month they aro all treated m the same way ; thoir creed, their character, or their social Btanding does not weigh for or against them.
