A NARROW ESCAPE.
[By Telegraph, j Cheistchuboh, March 16. A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred on the Northern Railway lino yeßterday afternoon. Tho approach to the bridge over Stuart's Gully had been washed away for a- distance of one and a half chains, leaving a chasm 80ft deep, over which the lino was suspended. The luggage train which left Kaiapoi at 2 p.m. was close to th« bridge when two young men named Fantliam and Stewart signalled to the driver to stop. Ho pulled up the train, which consisted of 20 waggons when close to the bridge. The railway employees have set to work to repair the breach, but traffic is still interrupted.
