Burke were riding m a trap, when the horse bolted, and Burko was thrown out and seriously injured. Connolly jumped out and fell on his head. He died three-quarters of an hour afterwards from concussion of the brain. Haweka, Feb. 15. The Stratford Relief Committee have decided to divide tho settlers who are given relief into three classes. The first contains those best able to bear their losses. The second those to whom assistance is necessary to enablo them to get through tho winter, but who are not absolutely destitute, and the third the class of those who arc absolutely destitute, or would, very soon become so but for assistance from the fund. The distribution will bo m building and fencing material. Tho first class will receivo four or five shilling* m the £ on the amount of assessment of loss, the second clas3 6s 8d to 7s 6tt m the £, and the third m full. Wellington, Feb. 15. A warrant appointing the following additional Commissioners for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition is gazetted :— Hon. G. M. Waterhouse, W. Kennaway, N. W. Levin, F. W. Pennefather, B. Petersen, J. W. Ritchie, J. G. Rustell and Fredk Young. The first appeal against the assessment for charitable aid is being made by tho Hutt County Council on the ground that the amount charged against them is too large, and that the assessment is unfair. At half-past threo this morning a sixroooicd house m Sydenham belonging to Georgo Scott was burned down. It was occupied by J. A. Bankin, and included a shed used as a general store. The house wos not insured. Bankin's stock was insured for £300 m the Victoria Office. There are m Clmsteluireh at the present time no less than thirty of the "gentry" formerly described as "Sydney Mngsmen." White, until a sum due the Club is paid, and tho attention of tho Lumsdon Club, racing under the D.J.C. rules, is to bo drawn to their want of courtesy m allowing White to run tho filly at their meeting, pointing out also that under the new rules all horses racing at such a meeting will be disqualified. The temperance party intend holding a monster open air meeting to influence the licensing election. Cardinal Moran leaves for Christchurch m the morning. He will be accompanied by the Bishops of Adelaide, Maitland, Wellington and Auckland. iNVBBCAnaiLL, Feb. 15. Tho warm rains of the pastjfow days have done great good throughout this district, especially to turnips and grass. The Aparima river is m high flood, and it is feared that the Oreti will also overflow should more rain fall. In this event serious dirunge to grain crops, now well advanced, will result. The test well for the supply of wafer to the Borough is now yielding eight thousand gallons ppr hour. Immense quantities of fine sand still flow m, and as it is intended to supply water by the direct pumping system into the mains without filtering, it will be a futile attempt to do so till the sand is got rid of. The Borough Council at a special meeting to-night, m view of the success of recent colonial loans, decided, to offer their new loan at _J, instead of 5 per cent.
