(Br Telegraph.) Auckland, Jan. 1. A man whose name is unknown, wag drowned at the Queen street wharf at midnight during the New Year celebration. The officers and crew of the barquo Lairie endeavored unsuccessfully to save him when he fell over the wharf. A roan named Daniels is stated to bo misting. Admiral Trvon and party nave returned from the Lake Country. A ball was given at the Northern Ulub m his honor. The Admiral arranged a race between the Chief Paul's crew m a canoe and four selected boats of H.M.S. Nelson, over a fonp mile course. There was great excitement and the gig defeated the Mauris by a length. The canoe is to bo presented to X awhiao. Napieb, Jan. 1. The long looted for rain fell this morning m the Forty-mile Bush, and when the last train left this aftern on all fear of further spread of fire wbb over. The firemen and their engine have returned to town. I hey were instrumental m saving a large amount of property. Wellington, Jan. 1. The steamer Maripoaa with the English mail left *on Francisco for Auckland on Deo. 20tb, being one day late. The Mararoa with the colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco, from Auckland, on Dec. 29th, being also one day late. Two vehicles collided on the Island Bay road this afternoon, and the occupants were thrown out. A Mrs Suean Davis had her t' igh fractured m three places, J HutchinBon an expressman, hud his right leg fractured m two places, and Mr C. E. Hanson received some rather nasty bruises about the head. The criminal calendar for the sossions which open on Tuesday next is much heavier than last quarter's, and comprises four charges of.larceny. two of ombezzliiment, and one each of arson, burglary, rape, indecent assault and abandoning a child. Mr James Kirby, formerly editor of the South Canterbury Times, has been appointed sub-editor of the Lyttelton Times vice Mr W. H. Atack, who takes the management of the Press Association at Wellington.
