ENGLISH MARKETS.

Messrs Miles Brothers and Co. report, under date London, August 13th : — wooi.. Very little wool has passed hands privately during the paat fortnight. In the North tho demand for woollen goods appears to be ex- 1 tremely moderate and many manufacturers are } confining their business to the executing of j orders they are able to obtain. Ou the Continent trade is not over active, and as the total available supplies for the next sales, to open here on the Ist prox., are not expeoted to fall far short of 350,000 bales, tha most we can hope for is that late rates will be maintained. The River Plate wool auctions, which commenced at Antwerp on the 28th July, terminated on the Bth inst. without any improvement m the demand, prices were quite 10 per cent lower than at the previous sales, and a considerable portion of the wool offered was bought m. The new arrivals to date for our next series are as follows : — Bales New South "Wales 41,261 Queensland 29,083 Victoria 41,465 South Australia 9,932 Western Australia ... ... 177 Tasmania 4,207 New Zealand 93,08(5 Capo and Natal 50,49-1 Total 276,70a Of theso about 23,000 bales wore forwarded direct from ship to the Continent, Yorkshire, etc., to whioh must be added the S),000 baleold stock. -<■ WHEAT, FIOCB, Ac. From recent reports the supplies on passage from all ports to Europe consisted of 2,020,000 quarters, being about 630,000 quarters more than m July, 1884 ; while m the United States the visible supply was stated to be 38,000,000 bushels. In Australian wheat the business done has been small, and prices are now 35s Gd to 3Cs per 4961b5, ex granary. OS coast the price is 34s to 34a 3d per 4Solbs. Stocks of New Zealand wheat are now small, fine long-berried is worth 34s to 355, and good round berried 32s to 3Je, ex granary per 406 lbs. Flour remains very dull. Snperfine Australians are worth 25s to 25s 6d, and New Zealand 20s to 21s per 280 lbs., ex store. In France the barley crop is said to bo very good, and no doubt considerable purchases will be made there on English account. Malting barley is hero worth 34s to 365, and ordinary samples 27s to 32s per 449 lbs., ex granary. Tho reports of onr oat crops are unfavorable, and prices have & hardening tendency. Fine heavy New Zealand sorts are quoted at 30s to 31s per 3841 b, and feed 27s to 28s per Imperial quarter. Finest New Zealand beans bring 34s to 36a, and finest boiling peas 40s to 50s, both per 5041 b. TALLOW, HIDES, ETO. Since the date of our last advices the tallow market has remained m the same quiet state, and the demand for Australasian has been trifling. Prices have still further declined, and value to-day of good to finest mutton is 26s to 29s 6d, and fair to fine beef 24a 6d to 27s per cwt., which is a fall of Is 6d to 2s per owt, during the past four weeks. Inferior descriptions too have been very dull of sale, and have declined to the same extent. Home tallow is plentiful, bnt the quality is falling off somewhat. The imports have beon 5514 casks, a considerable portion of which will probably go direct to the Continent, and the stock this day m first hands is about 19,700 casks against about 22,000 casks samo time last year. Hides — Although this market has been quiet, there has been a steady demand for Australian without alterations m prices. New Zealand heavy ox 5d to s>d, light 4Jd to 4Jd. and cows 4id per lb. Rabbit skins — At the auctions on the 7th inst., tho demand was very limited, and best sorts were about Id per lb lower, whilst other qualities were 2d per lb lower. The bulk was of undesirable quality, being mostly summer skins, ».B.,!owfnrred, and many of thoso from Melbourne and Tasmania were wormy. FBOZEN MEAT. In consequence of the absence of so masy people from town, there is just now very Uttlo demand for frozen mntton ; indeed, trajte m our market is extremely slow all round. With, a limited demand and abundant supplies, im» porters a«] meeting the market, and prices therefore rule very low. The Inveroarfnll haa arrived, with her carcases m good condition, bnt tho sheep ex Elderslie are turning ont m very bad order; some of them, m fact, are too bad to sell, and have to bo condemned. Theso damaged sheep being sold at any price they will fetch does not by any means improve tho market. There is not much prospeotof improvement at present, as there is plenty on hand and large supplies to follow. The lonia has arrived, and the Aorangi is dne m a few days. Prices today are as follows I— Canterbury sheep, 5d to 4Jd ; Wellington, 4Jd to 4*d : Melbourne, 4id> to 4d; Eiver Plate, 4*d. • MONKT. Bank rate, 2 per cent. (By Tblxobaph.j
