CHRISTCHURCH PRODUCE MARKET.
The following is tho Christchurch Corn Exchange report for the week ended Friday the 18th inst. ■■— The weeks transactions m the grain and produce markets havo been of a limited character. For a few special lines a liri.sk demand exists, but the balk of the produce is marked by extreme dulnesa. Prime hard winter wheat finds plenty of bnyors at top quotations, bat second quality lines can only be quitted at a concession on prices asked by holders. Chicktvheat is firm when fit to ship, but when damp buyers aro much leas numerous. Oats are wanted both for local requirements and for shipment, but prices do not rise so rapidly as might have been expeoted seeing how bare tho market is at present. No doubt the approaching spring tends to make local consumers cautious m purchasing heavily, and the Southern heavy stocks regulate the shipping prices. Barley romains inactive, the business of the week to note is a few lines of good feed for shipment at low prices. The chief enquiry for peas is for small lines for seed, these command full rates. Beans aro wanted for shipment, bnt buyers are not inclined to speculate at sellers' limits. Ryegross is qniet only small orders coming to hand, but the scarcity of this article keeps the market firm at quotations below. Coolcsf oot — There is a good demand for bright heavy seed fit to ship to tho Homo market ; discolored is not so saleable, the principal sales being made are to farmers, m small quotations.
