The weeklj returns of the B.uik of England, pub lished to-day, show the total reserve ir Dotes and bullion to ha £14,300,000, The proportion of the reserve to liabilities ia 42 per cent. Woul—At to-day'a sales 11,700 balei were catalogued. The market has s firmer tone. 28,000 bales have been withdrawn since the opening of the aeries. (Special xo the Pbess Association.) [Received 1.30 p.m., Sept. ISth.J London, Sept. 17. Tho issue of £500,000 worth of debentures is projected by a Queensland cempany. Sir Todd, Postmaster-General an<3 Superintendent of Telegraphs for South Australia, has been invited to contribute a paper on the construction of the overland telegraph line to Port Darwin at the next meeting of the Royal Colonial Institute. The frozen meat by the Ricnutaka is selling at 4j'd per Ib. The Indian Government confirm the reduction m cable charges on Press messages, to begin from January, if Great Britain consents. The Cable Company will not reduce the charges on public messages, because the Indian Government have refused to concede two pence- halfpenny per word. The New York Maritime Exchange appeals to President Cleveland to endeavor to subsidise the San Francisco line. The strike amongst the employes at Bir William Armstrong's factory at Elswick, has now been satisfactorily settled. The Hon. Mr Plunkett, Secretary for Works, opposes the Irish separation. Forty guineas per cent will now be charged for underwriting the sl;ip Bengollyun, 1198 tons, which left London for Adelaide on the 28th April.
