NAUTICAL ENQUIRY.
Wellington, Angnst 4. A preliminary enquiry was held to-day into tho collision between the Waihora and the barquentino May. The captain of the May states when he saw the steamer's lights hi 3 vessel wa3 travelling up harbor at the rate of three or four knota per hour. He soon lost sight of her port light, and her green light was on his starboard bow, and ho concluded tho steamer wonld clear him safely. Immediately after this, however, the steamer showed her green light, and she then looked as if she was going to cross his bow. Fearing there would be a collision, he put his helm harda-port, and dropped the mainsail. At the same time the May started to pay off, but almost directly afterwards she struck the steamer about the mainmast, carrying away her bowsprit and all her head gear. She steamer was going fast, and wont a long way down the harbor. Tho Bteamer, however, soon returned and asked whether any assistance was required.
