POLITICAL NEWS.

(By Telegraph.) (ruom oub own' coiiukspoxdf.nt.) Wellington", July 21. Sir Julius Vogcl's petition will come before the Public Petitions Committee on Wednesday next. The House ling boen occupied nearly nil the afternoon on a debute on the proposed continuance of a subsidy to the San Francisco mail service. The debute has just (9 p.m.) been resumed, and it is thought quite possible that the proposal for a further subsidy may be accepted. Auckland members say they don't care much how the thing goes ; tlmt they arc prepared to inaugurate si direct mail service of their own. There bids fair to be a perfect crop of amendments before the Committee. The Canterbury Members are still working hard for the East and West Coast proposals, though the general impression is that the proposals are doomed. At present there is a clear majority of 19 against the scheme. A minor to the effect that Mr Montgomery was to be called to the tipper House having been published in a Southern paper, I have inquired into the matter and found there is no foundation for the statement. Mr Larnaeh, Minister for Mines, made his first statement about the mines to-night. It is not considered a success, containing too much of the Minister's personal experiences in proportion to the amount of useful informntion afforded. Private members have already been called on to give up one of their days for private business, and after this week Government business is to take precedence on Wednesdays, and there will bs an evening sitting on Mondays. Some strong representations have been made to the members of both Houses relative to the various increases in taxation that arc still proposed to be carried through. Many assert plainly that they can't bear any more taxation in the present condition of affairs : thutthe people will be driven to resist further imposts because they are wholly unable to pay them.
