UNITED BANDS OF HOPE JUVENILE EXHIBITION.

This exhibition was opened yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Mr B. Turnbull, Member of the House of Representatives for Timaru, m the Timaru Assembly Booms. Mr Turnbull m a short, but happy speech, m which he encouraged the youthful members of the Bands of Hope to do their duties faithfully and well, declared the exhibition open, and the number of visitors being even at that hour fairly large, the many exhibits were eagerly criticised. The exhibition though small was very comple|», apd embraced many of the arts and sciences. The room was tastefully decorated, and the stalls baing arranged around the sides of the room, allowed of all the work shown being examined with but little inconvenience. Amongst it was some of a really high-class kind, which showed unmistakeably that our young people are spending their leisure time to good advantage. The number of articles lent was large, and comprised some choice specimens of ladies' handiwork, etc. During the afternoon, the rooms were well attended, whilst, m the evening they were filled almost to overflowing. His Worship the Mayor presided, taking tho chair at 7.30. Tho programme gone through was : a. long one, and showed m th* plaineit manner poieible that the

members of the Bands of Hope are as well versed m matters of a literary kind as they are m those pertaining to the latest pattern m civwel work, color m orewel silks, or device m crochet. Those who took part m the entertainment, which it is almost needless to say was much enjoyed, were Misses Alice Burford, Rose North, Martha Halford, Gertie Brown, Minnie Passmoro, Maude Packman, Achsa Clarke, Annie Mcllroy, Edith Parsons, Susan Whittaker, and Masters Geo. Passmore, and W. Storey, who each gave a recitation ; Misses Clarke and Hitch, a song each ; the Misses Hitch and Clarke and Master C. Collins instrumental music, and " the juveniles " a large number of very nicely rendered choruses. Among the " exhibits " are some essays on " How can we best combat the evils of strong drink " and " Why am I a total abstainer." Those essays are fairly written, but are not so good as one mkht expoct from " mombers nncl-r 20 years of age." The second essay named is not to exceed fifty words, the prize for which was awarded to the following : — " Because while tho perfect health and prosperity of the community is consistent with total abstinence a very large proportion of its disease, poverty and crime are traced to the love of strong drink. I would help to eradicate these evils from the human race, and I am therefore an abstainer." The Exhibition, taken altogether, vras a great success, and rofloeted the greatest credit on its promoters. We hope to see it held annually.
