At the inquest on the body of Blary Scalding, aged 18, who died from injuries receiTod a fortnight ago while stepping from a train in motion at Pouro3o station, a verdict of accidental death was returned. At the meeting of the Otago University Council to-day the report of the Committee appointed to consider the School of Mines question was brought up. It stated that in order to render tho School of Mines of any real service it will be necessary to appoint a lecturer on geology, surveying and applied mcohanics, and the Committee recommend that certificates be given to the students on the principle adopted by the Cambridge University extension scheme, and Borne of the German Universities. They also recommend that an assistant be appointed in the mining centres in Otago and on the West Coast, and that the Government be requested to pass an Act which will insist on all certified companies employing mine managers from some educational establishment, and in conclusion suggested that the Government should be asked to give a sum of money towards furthering these schemes.
