CORRESPONDENCE.

DOMESTIC WAYS AND MEANS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMARU HERALD. Sir,— l see the old subject, "" Ts it wise to marry ?" has started m your paper. " A Young Man's Friend " shows a very nice side of the question— all love and joy on £150 to £200 per year — but let us look at the reality. What is this sum to keep a wife and children ? I consider it quite unnecessary to go into details. Of course you will find plenty of young married couples with their first baby, who will say they are saving a little money, but look at them m five years' time with perhaps four children, and nsk them what they consider sufficient to keep them and savo tho anxiety that parents have with a growing family on the abore miserable pittance. Girls, if they could but see it, are much happier single. Let them strive to learn some light business and keep themselves, instead of looking for a husband who is bound to work for a wage. Wliv, tho man himself loves liberty ; his anxiety for his family, and what he has to put up with from his employers because he is encumbered with a wife and family, m a fow years alters the man entirely. Who cannot tell a married man at first sight ? Where is the happy smile he had when we knew him some years ago ? Look at him now. Now look at the struggling wife ; is it the merry girl we knew years ago ? Young men and maidens, look for yourselves and save your liberty. Do nofc forget Punch.? advice given some years Bgo : — " Advice to those abont to marry — Don't !" I am, fee, A Pooh Mabbied Man.
