An inquiry will be held into the recent fire at the Lyceum buildings m Hobson street, as lie circumstances connected with the outbreak were of a suspicious character. The inquiry is expected to be a lengthy one. Detective Twohey is employed working up evidence. The man Atkinson, who was concerned m the Macrae trouble at Mangare, was committed to the lunatic asylum to-day. Mr Joseph Banks, manager of the Frozen Meat Company, has had an interview with Dr Hector relative to fish preserving projects, and the doctor recommends that attention be principally given to kowhai and schnapper. The South British risk on the Junction Hotel fire was £450 half of which is reinsured. March 1. H. D. Wilcox, Postmaster and Telegraphist at Alexandria South, m Vincent County, has been brought before the local Court and remanded on a charge of embezzlement of public moneys. The six days go-as-you-please, which was a failure, was won by Rayner with 365^ miles ; Swan did 362£, and Crofts 359J-. Mr Matthew Henry Oram, of the Royal Hotel, Christchurch, a well known resident there, died here very suddenly yesterday from heart disease. He was taken ill on the racecourse, and brought m to Mr Haydon's Criterion Hotel m a cab. Dr Prins, of Chriatehurch, who was on the course, was sent for and prescribed a powder for him, to be given every quarter of an hour. Mr Haydon and Mr Pilliet were m attendance on him, and. while Mr Haydon was m the act of giving him one of the powders at 6 p.m. he died m his arms. He had been speaking a moment before. The occurrence is much deplored by all Chrißtchurch visitors. The body will be taken to Christchurch for burial.
