As usual the first day was c b '. voted to the judging of sheep and miplemen Ib '• these being the only exhibits on the grour b•' Tho shoep yards present a loss uttmcti Ib '• appearaneo than could bo desired, one half lor' tho double range of pens being quito omp inv and the other half is not quito filled. < 7at the other hand a larger number of owne

t names appear on tho catalogue this yeiir in i. the merino classes. Tho separation of . exhibits of this brood into two section? „ — those that have been housed and clothed r nnd those that have not been so treated — i serins to have encouraged local run- ; holders fo send in their stock, uu- . deterred by tho idea that it would be , useless to plaeo their run sheep in l competition -with more domesticated animals. r The competition in T.oieesters is limited, , but there aro a good many exhibits, and ; other classes of longwools aro poorly repre- , sonted. The implements make a pretty good ■ show, and it may bo said that all are of a [ most useful kind. There is a good muster of twine-binding harvesters, most of them eon- , tnining some improvement or other on those , shown last year, and these will command the j attention of farmers. Thero are several im- • proved implements on the ground, and a new . Christchui'oh firm compete iu the fundamental article, the plough. A new stylo of winnowing , machine, designed and mado by a local man, is • well worthy of attention. Thcra are not j many vehicles, but among thorn are eome lino . specimens of carriage builders' work : from local shops. The wire-bnrbing I industry has three representatives, from . Timanf, Oamaru, anil Chiisloliureli, anil . our looal "Acme" fiu-torv has a specimen , plant on the ground, and tho prorcss of barbing the virc will he shown. Tho judges , of implements found so much that is new, so much that is interest ing, thu(. they did not complete their labors yesterday. The jud^e? of long-woolleil sheep 'finished early, but those who had to compare the merinos required most of the afternoon to perform their task. Tn addition to the entries under tho prize schedules there aro several collections of useful articles for exhibition only, and tlicej will form an attractive featuro of the Show. The only ones on tho ground yesterday wero n good collection of washing and mangling machines shown by Mr Cornish, and a tent full of hardware shown by Messrs A. .T. Quclch and Co., Mr J. K. Stansell's successor. A number of others will be found there to-to-day. The fences for the jumping contests were put in order yesterday, and a good deal of jumping will have to he done to-day if all the horses entered compete, as there are three different prizes to he competed for, and the horses entered for them not being the same in every ease, each prize will require a separate contest. The wnathcr yesterday was very fine, hut in the afternoon n cold wind sprang up from the south and about fire a driving rain eet in, causing fears for the success of to-day's Show. A shower or two would do a great deal of good by laying the dust, the surface of tho Wni-iti road being in a Tory loose Btate yesterday. Tho sky continued heavily clouded all the evening, but. very little ruin fell, and at midnight the sky secmril somewhat lighter. There were a good many country jicople in town yesterday, especially of the Mackenzie Country, and no doubt a fine morning — if wo aro favored with one — will sec the early trains arrive full of people bent on keeping properly one of the greatest holidays of South Canterbury. The arrangements for to-day are tho same as usual. Other exhibits than sheep ami implements are to be on the ground at mi early hour, and tho .judging of these will ho proceeded with as coon as they are nrrangod in their respective, plner-n. The public are admitted from 9 a.m. till noon at a charge of hiilf-a-erown, and after noon at a shilling.
