Mr Butler, of the Xntive Ollice, who was sent to make enquiries, found that the beacons placed there by Captnin Fuircliild recently were removed, and so much broken that it would take some | considerable time to repair and re-erect them. One of the two chiefs who were concerned m the destruction of the beacons has gone to Whatiwhatihoe with Tawhiao. The other was still at Knwhia, and when Mr Butler called on him to assist at once m repairing and re-erecting the beacon?, he answered that he could not do so without instructions from Tawhiao. These two chiefs are the same as were concerned m pulling up pegs along the road from Kawhia around to Aotea harbor. At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board to-dnv it was resolved to reject the present scheme for hchting the harbor by electricity. The Harbor. Board's reasons for rejecting the electric light are the following : — That the Xew Zealand Electric Light Company have not carried out their arrangements of January 27th m such manner as to enable them to require the Board to pay contract price, and accept delivery of an "installation "m its present condition. That the Company has not attempted to prove tho lights erected are of 2000 candle power. Tha' the workmanship and material baa not been of uniformly first-class quality. It is admitted that the cost of the sixteen lights is somewhat below 4d per hour exclusive of interest on cost or depreciation of plant. The Board recognise the necessity for lighting the Harbor thoroughly, and lire prepared to negotiate with any Company for lighting, either by electricity or otherwise. McLcod (owner of the ketch Edith Reid) v. the Xew River Harbor Board and Campbell aud Ritchie (lessees of the Invercargill jetty). The plaintiff's contention tvas that the bottom of the harbor at the jetty was so unequal that the ketch strained at low water and was damaged to the extent claimed for. The lessees were made defendants because they had ordered the shifting of tha vessel after she had been partly unloaded to make room for a steamer. The defence mainly was that the damage was caused by the stupid way m which the ketch (a centre board craft) was discharged, all her cargo being cleared out amidships, without touching that stowed fore and aft. The jury were a -Considerable time coming to a decision. Tomorrow argument will bo taken as to which Jf the defendants tho judgment shall be ;n(cred against.
