Bombay, Aug. 18,
During tho past fortnight two hundred deaths from cholera have occurred here, and the disease is now assuming tho character of an epidemic. Stringent measuros havo been adopted to provent a further development.
London, Aug. 18.
The launch of a torpedo boat, which has been built for tho Victorian Governmont, took place atCheswick to-day. Tho ceremony was porformed by tho Right Hon. H. C. E. Childera, after whom tho boat was named.
In tho House of Commons last night, Mr Gladstone waa questioned as to tho intentions of Government regarding tho future of New Guinea. In reply, tho Premier stated that .13 Governmont refused to ratify tho annexation of that island by Queensland, it was unnecessary to say anything about the future. The Government waa satisfied that there was no fear of a claim to tho island being made by any foreign Power.
