A CURIOUS CASE.
(Br Tblkghjaph.) . Wellington, Aug. 2 A p"cu]i'ir case was heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day. James Ryan w-is I'liavged with being unlawfully at larjo, having been sentenced to four years' penal serritiulo. Mr Shaw appeared for the accused. It appears tbnt accused bad eirned a remission of his sentMi?o at Mount Cook prison and had got his good sorvico money and was discharged, but to comply with the usual rule he was put oa board a steamer to be sent to Lyttelton from whence he came, but he absconded from the steamer, as his wife and family were in Wellington. Mr Shaw said the Gsoler of Mount Cook Prison would arrest tho man the moment he was discharged from the Court. Accused (who was crying bitterly) said be had had his g od conduct remission cancelled, no that he would haro to complote his sentence, which meaiit another twelve months in Mount Cook Prijon through his having been discharged from lrgtl custody half a day too soon. Mr Shaw paid that such a thing should be done was abominable. Accuted was then discharged, aud on leaving the Court prisoner was re-arrested, and will have to undergo twelve months' imprisonment at Mount Cjok Prison. -
