ASSESSMENT COURT.
TIMARU.— Monday, Mabcd: 28. (Before R. Beethatn, Esq., Judge.) The annual sitting of tho Assessment Courf to hear and determine appeals against tin valuation list of the Borough of Timaru, wo held m tho Borough Council Chamber* yea terday. Mr K. H. Lough, Town Clerk and Valuer appeared on behalf of the Borough Council to sust«m the vnluslion list. The 801 l as exhibited yesterday showet tho valuation of tho Borough to bi £51,682 10s, but from thia has t< be deducted appeals allowed amounting t< £295, which leaves the rateable value of thi Borough for the year at £51,387 10s. A: compared with last year's vuluation, tho m creaso is £3219, and compared with 1879 £01-17 10s. The number -of J now buildingi erected during the year has nearly reachec 100, and to thia fact, together with an m creafod valuation of hotel properties, stores <io., is due tho large additional amount showr on the roll, but against this increase must be considered a general reduction of from 4 to £ per cent, made on small household properties, The email amount allowed for appeals against I theassessmentiß highly crcdilableto the vuluer Mr E. H. Lough, find the increased rateable valuo speaks volumes for the steady progivtf of the town. Bowen, sections Government Town ..: 20 10 George Purdie, shop ... 85 50 Alfred O. G. Ktone,section and slatle 80 60 The appeals of John Meikle, George Newey, Alfred J. Parsons, and A. O. G. Stone were not entertained. In twenty-seren instances the objectors failed to appear, and three objections were declared informal. The Court also ordered tho following alterations m the names of occupants : — Robert Bowie, house and iccl.ion, Arthur itrcet, to Kobort Dearsley; Patrick Blake, sectiou, Bussc'l square, to William Masse; j William Collins, auction room, Mum South Road, to George Gnbites; Georgo Murdoch, house, King street, to Benjamin Bailey ; William MeKerrow, office, Strathallan street, to Robert Wilkin ; Ri.hard Turnbull, shop, Main South Road, to Moss Jonas ; Samuel Trilford, shop, Arthur street, to Rohert Wulsh : and Robert L Wilson, houae, Catherine street, to William ifassey.
