ENGLISH CARLE.

Held Over. — We are obliged to hold over all correspondence, together with leading and other matter, till next issue. Board of Education. — An advertisement appears m another column inviting applications for the positions of master anel mistress of the Kakahu school. A master and mistress are also wanted for the Otaio school. Educational. — It might be interesting to intending candidates to know that the South Canterbury Board of Education purpose holding the examination for Scholarships during the second week m February next. The annual examination of pupil teachers is also advertised to take place at the same time. The requirements for pupil teachers will be the same as on former years. Resident Magistrate's Court, Tisiahu. — At the above Court last Saturday (before R. Beetham, Esq., R.M.), Duncan Gough was brought up on a charge of being drunk and disorderly, -was fined 20s, or the usual alterna- j tive. A large number of cases are set down for hearing at this morning's sitting. ) 1 Mount Cook Road Board Election. — The following was the residt of the polling | f»r the election of three members of the j Mount Cook Road Board on Friday last ; — John Hunter Raine, 91 ; Alexander Spalding, 85 ; John 8. Rutherford, 74 ; Thornhill Cooper, 19. The three first named persons were therefore declared duly elected. j South Canterbury Licensed Victuallers Association. — A meeting of the above will be held m the Club Hotel, to-morrow , evening, at 8 o'clock, when general important matters affecting the trade will be considered. Billiards. — Mr P. Bell, the lessee of the Grosvenor billiard-room, intimates m another column, to his numerous friends and the public generally, that he lias also leased the billiard-room of the Criterion Hotel. Road Board Elections. — The annual elections of three members on the Temuka and Geraldine Road Board respectively, take place at noon to-morrow. For the former we believe Messrs John Hayhurst, T. Swinton, Badham, and Ensor will come forward for j certain, while the names of one or two other possible candidates are mentioned. Messrs W. Postlethwaite, James Hay, J. P. "Wilson, and De Renzy, we believe, will contest the Geraldine election. The ratepayers m each Road District will therefore have excellent men to select from. Fire Police. — We learn on good authority that it is probable that our gallant defenders, the Timaru Volunteer Artillery, are likely to make themselves a useful as well as an ornamental body, as we believe that m future they will turn out on the fire-bell ringing the ularm, and act as fire police, and otherwise assist the Fire Brigade m their onerous duties. At all fires where property is saved, evil disposed persons will damage and carry off what they can, and m our opinion the Volunteers are taking a step m the right direction, and one that will undoubtedly raise them higher if possible m the public estimation that they stand at present. ThE Opihi Bridge. — We trust that some steps will shortly be taken towards bridging the whole of the Opihi river for traffic purposes, for as matters now stand, it is dangerous to life and limb. The river, instead of running m one stream under the bridge on the northern side as formerly, is divided into three branches. The principal of these is m the old channel close to the southern bank which is being so rapidly scoured away that the Arowhenua Hotel is now only a few feet from the edge, and will have to be shifted some distance further back. Another branch — the middle one — also containing a good deal of water, and with nasty steep banks, runs just at this side of the southern approach to the bridge ; while the third and minor one flows under the bridge. To cross the Opihi as it is at present divided, one has to wind and zig-zag about m a most confusing manner, more especially at night time when the faint track cannot be seen. The difficulty as to bridging we believe is that the two Road Boards concerned — the Temuka and the Levels — cannot agree as to their respective shares of the cost. Surely Borne means might be devised, either by a conference or by arbitration, by which the bridge might bo carried right across to the southern bank. If something is not done soon we feel convinced we shall hear of loss of life or some other serious result happening.
