THE CAVE HILL BOAD. TO XHB mDITOa OP TBB TTKARD BSBAIID. Sib, — Money has been devoted some time now for making a road over the Care Hill— a very necessary work, and, it not done soon, we may »eaaonably anticipate hearing of some frightful accident. The traffic over the present cutting has increased ao mnob lately, that it is no uncommon occurrence to tee three or four drajs on the road, betides other conveyance-, and this traffic will atill increase. Lots of engineering talent has been employed to find out the most scientific line of road, and, it is said, with the usual re«ult-t-eaeh successive suggested line is something •▼one than, the preceding one. No doubt we are burdened .with, talent.; , The latest design, however, has this advantage— it would alw*j»

be cool m summer; tho sun's nyß would •carcely resrh it What condi 1 o-i the road would be' m m witter is, perhaps, U"necess:irv to think of ; this o nsideration must be le.lt to tho engineer. Now, premising that I do not lay claim to the slightest little bit of engineering lalenr.yet I will pre.urae to offer a suggestion tj the Iload Board, on the usual terms. Let the road start (if you will) where it des at present— l beliere it is one of the latest designs— and continue up the present way ti!l it meets tho old bullock track, then let it take the direction of tbe old track, lower the top of the hill (say 30ft.), widen the Pareora side of the present way, put m ab ut, two chains of stony fencing from the top downwards on this side of the road ; cut a good drain on each side, metal the whole, and I believe you will hays a road over the hill coding but little for repairs, that will last till the suggested railway from the Wai mate to the Care station is made. It certainly will not be a straight road, but I fancy cattle and horses appreciate a pretty curre. The money voted is, I suppose, fructifying for some one's benefit — two and a half is not excessire. I am, &c., A SUBSCBIBB*.
