GENERAL SUMMARY.
The amount of damages to be awarded to the United States by the Geneva Board of Arbitration will exceed three millions only by a few thousand pounds. At a dinner given to the Arbitrators on Sept 8, at Cantriets, the toast to the health of all nations represented at Geneva was greeted with loud cheering, the band playing the national airs of the different nations. The Doncaster September meeting commenced on the 10th. The most prominent feature of the sport was the great Yorkshire Handicap, won by .Dalnacardoch ; Neapolitan was second, with Sylvester third. Twelve horses started. Mr Odger has agreed not to contest the parliamentary election at Proton, (? Preston), if the Liberal candidate would pledge himself to advocate the abolition of the game laws. There have been heavy thunderstorms at Bolton m Lancashire, several lives were lost and the crops much damaged. Many of the Jesuits which were expelled from Germany will go to Ireland, where they are promised a hearty welcome. The Royal mail steamship from the Cape of Good Hope has arrived at Southampton with advices to August sth. Coal has advanced. Twenty thousand midland coal miners are preparing to strike for higher wages. Rinderpest is prevailing m the provinces. Precautions have been taken to prevent it. There is a strike amoiig the artisans' wives against the high price of meat. There is increased demand for colonial meats. Anewundertaking entitled the National Bank of New Zealaud, Limited, has been brought forward under influential auspices with a capital of £2,000,000, m shares of £1 0 each. Application for authority to be made at the next session of the Colonial Legislature.
