EDUCATIONAL MEETINGS.

THE POINT. The annual meeting of the ratepayers was held here on Monday evening, when Mr Meek, the Chairman, presented the annual balance-sheet, showing tbe sum of £13 5* 2.1 iv hand, wbiuh was adopted l>y the meeting. The Chairman then referred to the very lengthy and unproductive correspondence which had taken pi ice with the Board ot Education, and read many of the letters, showing a steady aud continuous endeavour to obtain necessary assistance towards the improvement of the school ; assistance certainly merited, because more than £100 collected privately has beeu expended on the school building, Aud as the land has long since been duly conveyauced to the Supe inteudeut, it would also appear that the district had, by clause 61 of the Ordinance, a perfectly good claim for such, assistance. Much dissatisfaction was expressed by the ineetiug, and ou the Chairman calling on it to elect a new committee, Mr \V. B. Ho well proposed, and Mr Win Parr Beconded — '• That this meeting decline to elect any committee." Mr Acton said he thought it better to try a little longer, and offered as an amendment, seconded by Mr Orton — ••• That the meeting now eleot.a Commit tee."

The amendment was with some difficulty carried, ami Messrs Halstead, Acton, •Strachan, Botherway and Anderson were elected. Mr T. Strachan was subsequently choMQ Chairman of committee. Mr Meek said he wished to inform them that he had just received a note, from the teacher (Mrs K. Worthington) tendering her resignation, ami he wished to point ont to the new committee that it would now moat probably become necessary to obtain funds for any other teacher who might bo angaged. Mr W. B. Howell proposed and Mr Orton seconded— "That the rateparera request the Board of Education will take immediate steps towards placing the school on a better footing, as the loss of time resulting from much official correspondence is serious to th.9 children of laboring men, whose school tim» is necessarily limited to a very few years." Carried. It was then proposed by.Mr Acton, teconded by Mr Parr— "That the Board of Education be requested to value the present building, m accordance with clause 61 of the Ordinance, aud enable the committee to build a teacher's house, m addition to the necessary repaii a, &o, which have been previously asked for." Carried. It was proposed by Mr Strachan, Beconded by Mr Howell — -That the ratepayers regret the implied censure on the late committee, contained m a letter from the Board of fc!ducation, and iv the Inspector's report, inasmuch as, neither seats, desks, closet, stove, nor repairs could be provided without funds, the only money hitherto available during three years having been £100 of private subscription." Carried. A vote of thanks to the late Chairman, for the many letters which he had written, concluded the business.
