The lirst ploughing match iii this district took place on 15t,h Sept. m a. level gross paddock on Jffr Acton's farm. .The ground wus in,excellent condition, having been moistened a day or two previously by a good shower. The Weather wiis most, favorable for a contest of this kind, aiid there' was a large attendance both of: competitors aud .spectators... Of the former, thore were representatives from, the I'imaru, Waimato, Kakabu, , Temuka, and. Point districts ; the Various competitions being open ! U> All 'comers.' 'The meeting was "a marked success,;, no less than sixteen teams competing. The character of -the work- was generally of a serviceable, cliaracter,. tbqurfi it was scarcely up to. ploughing match standard • but that shortcoming is what meetings of this sort nre intended to 'rectify, and : the 1 -succesi which has attended this first mateh ■ argues well for the future;,. There were two classes for single-furrow ploughs, wheel or swing, and one for double-furrow. Tho 'match started at 9 a.m., the finish being fixed for 3.30 p.m.-, but before that ti hie all the meu had finished work. At that hour the judges, Messrs ..Anderson (Paroora), Irvine (Levels),, , and , a gentleman .from Cliristchurch, whoso name we have not ascortaiued, entored upon' their duties, whicli they discharged ma most careful maurife?, arid to the satisfaction, we beiiove, of all concerned.
