MAKIKIHI PLOUGHING MATCH.
Thia match came off on JFriday last, and waa attended with a large measure of success, the attendance of competitors and of spectators being very good, about 120 beiug present. There were but two classes—singlefurrow and double-furrow ; m the former class seven teams competed, and m the latter four. The match was held ov a piece of new laud m front of the Makikihi Hotel, whioh was m very fair order for the purposo. The weather was all that could be desired. The work, taken as a whole, was a credit to the ploughmen of the district. Messrs George Manchester, Auderson (Pareora), and M. Studholme officiated as judges of the ploughing, aud their decisions apparently gave satisfaction to all concerned. Taylor, Timaru — Martin Brothers. For the best pair-horse team, a prize of £1 presented by Mr A. Turnbull, Pareora — R. Wellwood. For the best groomed threo-horee team a prize of 10s— Quiuu Brothers. For the best groomed pair-horse team a prize of 10s — Quinn Brothers. For the best kept harness a pair of hamea presented by Mr G. C Williams, Timaru— R. Irvine. v The match waa followed by aome excellent foot-racing, and the day waa brought to a cloae by a dinner at the Makikihi Hotel, which waa served m Mr Jonea' usual firstclass style. After dinner the prizes were distributed to the various, competitors. A ball also took place at the Hotel and waa largely attended, dancing being kepi up with spirit until the following morning.
