Thames Borough Council.

A special meeting of the Borough r Counc'i was held yesterday aftemoop, Present: Cra Bndford (in the chaiv,, Trembath, Wood, Lucas, audPoul--3 grain. t The Chairman infotmed the Council r that the meeting had been convened for the purpose of bringing under tho notice of the Hon. Minister of Mine 3 { ; (Hon, A. J. Gadman) several matters in connexion with the Borough and asking for monetary assistance. The several matters constituting the reason of tho interview were agreed upon, and Mr Cadman introduced to the meeting, when, af.er due tion, he granted subsidies amounting to £500 towards carrying out tho following works:- Gleaning mining debris from the Karaka. and Hapo Creeks, metalling goldfields roads within the Borough, and repairing the Waiotahi cart bridge. In regard to tlie prevention of obslruetiug water -courses by the depositing of mullock in the creeks, * the Minister advis'd that joint action i be taken by the Borough and County 1 Councils in regard i o the matter, He considered that if the Councils could agree on some reasonable course to adopt, and laitf tho matter before the Mines Department, i way to overcome the difficulty would be found. The erection of picket fences at the railway otationa was again brought under the notice of Mr Cadman, wbo said that as the Council had improved the surroundiugs at the Grahamstown station as rjquircd, tho necessary authority for erecting the fences ( would be given. The Chairman (Cr Kadford) thanked Mr Cadman for his kindness in granting the Council's r< quests not only on the present, but on every occasion in which he had been appealed to, and. on behalf of the Council ho expressed deep regret at hij reiiring (-from political life, as it was a sphere in ' which he had not only covered himsolf ' with honor, but had conferred honor on the various constituencies who had elected him during the past 18 years to represent them, and that piior to this interview a special meeting of tho Council had been held and the following resolution uaanimously adopted; ''That the Council regret the early retirement of the HonA. J. Cadman, Minister of .Mines and Railways, fcom the Houso of .Representatives, and extend to him their siacero sympathy in tho cause that has rendered such a step necessary, but trust that a well earned rest will Restore him to tho blessings of health and permit him to agaiu assume the high positions in the councils of tho colony that he has won by his ability, integrity, and sterling honesty of purpose. The Council also take the opportunity to convey to the Hon. Mr Cadman their sincere thanks for the assistance he and the Liberal Government have always extended to the mining induslty, and t 0 the favorable consideration given to the Council's applications for help on all occasions."
