Orpen, against whom there is a ■ charge of'murder arising out'of aoassof alleged malpractice, was brought"-baok to Auckland fron. Sau Francisco,by the Maripoßa yesterday morning. He is being.brought back by Detective jVaddern, who left Auck* land as far buck as January 22nd, three days after Orpen's arrest in 'Frisco, aimed with a warrant and extradition papers, The inform- , ation laid against Dr. Orpen was that on December 25th,'1897, he did at''Auckland kill and murder one Susan Harriot Campbell McCallum, There was a good deal'of speculation as to whether the "American Court would grant the extradition on a charge of murder, as it was necessary for this purpose to produce prima f aoie evidence of murder. It was well intp Aprilbefore.tneproceedings '', were completed/but •on the 11th: of that month the extradition was granted by the (Trited States Circuit Court. As the prisoner evidently did not apply for a habeas corpus within fourteen days, the mandate from President McKinley arrived from Washington in time for-the.detective tooatchthe Maripaosa, sailing from San Francisco on < Slay 19th. \' The steamer Akaroi, which for the last three years Hsb been running on the Coromandel'Auckland route, has paid her last visit 'to Coromandel' under the eld rzgimi, tho vessel l having been purchased 'by an Auckland Grin (Musars Jaggor and Parker.)
