A Curious Case.

CHARGED WITH DRUNKEN- ■ NESS. ' A STRONG DEFENCE. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) Auckland, December 22. The Police Court was occupied the whole of to-day hearing a charge pre; ferrcd by the police against George South, sharebroker, with being drunk; and disorderly in Chancery-street'oh the 18th inst, and with having also obstructed Cbnstable Timothy McCarthy in the execution of h'i3 duty. The case arose out of a stray child being found in Queen-street near tha Exchange, and South insisted on the polico taking charge of it, It is alleged that the constable refused, whereupon South took the child to the Police Station himself,' and- intended to lay an information against the con* stable for not doing what South considered was his duty. • However, it is alleged South used .disorderly behaviour at the Police Station, and. the police also contend that he was drunk, and therefore thej arrested him, and locked him up till 9 p.m., when he was bailed out. There are 22 witnesses for the defence, which will be taken to-morrow, the case for the prosecution lasting all to-day. Mr Theo. Cooper is conducting the case' for the defendant.
