THE Thames Advertiser. Favour to none; fear of none; jutice to all. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1896. PUBLIC BATHS AND RECREATION GROUND.
At the Council meeting last evening the Mayor brought tip liis motion according to notice, •' That the sum of £350 now set aside for the purchase of a recreation ground be diverted and used in the erection of public baths." Ho pointed out that it Was Unlikely sufficient money could bo obtained to purchase a ground, and he thought that as bathp were so much required it would be far better' to grasp at the substance and let the shadow go, in fact take the necessary steps for the utilisation of the money iti the (direction he suggested. After the town Clerk had pointed out that to do that a privato Bill would need to be passed through Parliament, Cr Scott opened up fire against the proposal, and in the couise of a few minutes Crs Whitehead, Foy and Poulgrain had each adopted a similar action. These Councillors, were unanimous: as to the necessity of public baths, but they could not see tho force of the £350 being taken. Cr Whitehead suggested that the assistance of the public be invoked in tho erection of baths on the foreshore if necessary, but Cr Foy seemed to think that a fresh water ablution would be more likely to meet with favor, and he suggested that the Town Clerk write to the secretary of tho Te Aroha Domain Board enquiring as to tha cost of a fresh water bath erected in Te Aroha. Tho Council, however, decided to adopt a proposal by Cr Whitehead to the effect that they should re-open the public bath question at an early dato.
