PURIRI.

Operations in this mine are steadily progressing, and the levels upon the d fferent lodes are being pushed ahead vigorously. The drive upon the No, 1, or main quartz lode, has been advanced a further distance of ten feot for the week, and tho total distanpe so far accomplished in this southerly direction is exactly 40 feet, In the face of tho levol the lode, in accordance with the characteristics of the different ore lodes in this district, has shrunk into a thicknoss of 15 i-ches. This feature is looked upon as a fnvourable indication, as is noticeable in Wor h's property, which lies adjacent. At times the only sign of the reef is a seam, then in tho next foot or so tha lodo swells to usual dimensions. However, as the work in question is responsible for the production of ore carrying coarse particles of gold, a rich shoot, similar to Worth's, may bo met with at any foot driven. Driving upon the small lead is also in progress, and a distance of 50 feet has been driven from tho starting point, aud Mr Sullivan anticipates meeting with the junction of the No. 2 reef in another 20 feo*« of driving. Throughout tbat distance this load has yielded pan dish prospects, and as soon as it becomes associated wiili the No. 2, it will bo only reasonable to surmise that the enrichment of both lodes should bo evidenced. This company is perhaps one of the many who intend to throughly develope their property, and in order to still prosecute further exploring works the manager has received instructions from the head office to increase the staff of hands. This should enable Mr Sullivan, to give the ground a thorough overhauling. The company are deserving of praise, and we sincerely hope that their efforts in this direction will be attended with the success they justly deservo. Mr Sullivan informs me that they experience con* siderable difficulties in convoying the necessaries of life and other requisites up from Puriri to their mines. T. would suggest that the parties interested in this mining district should without delay petition Parliament for a grant for a road from tho Puriri township up to their mines. Tl o prospects of tho industry warrant it. and 1 don't see why our Puriri neighbours should bo left out in tho cold just for the sake of asking.

MINING REVIEW OF THE WEEK. During the post week tho tono of the sharemnrkefc was somewhat) more cheerful than it lias recently been, thore being more disposition Jto do business, Inquirers for stocks both in Up-country and local lines and a large amount of business has been transacted. The good nows to hand from tho manager of the W.aihi that the Welcome lode lias been met with, and cat into for a length of 7 J feet, and no sign of the other wall of tlje lode, and also that the ore yielded by assay tm 4dwt' of pure gold equal to about £10 por ton was the means of a brisk and steady 'demand for all leading mining stocks. The Waihi-Siherton Extended was also to the fore with a good sound telegram, and free gold showing in the lode at this level augurs well for the future success of this company. The successful flotation of the Norfolk on the British market, with a good rise in Hazelbanks, had the effect in hardening tho demand, and shares all round advanced to higher rates.
