MINING NEWS.

MAY QUEEN. .Good progress is being made in the various works at the No. 3 level of the Queen of the May section. The N0.4 reef going east is improving both in size and quality, and today there is water oozing from the face. This the manager is hopeful will drain the water off from the winze, when he expects to again resume sinking operations. The drive on the north-west lodeisalso beingpushed ahead and what was supposed to be the junction of the No 4 reef is according to the present appearance of the lode in the face merely a 'blister of quartz, .which expanded out to fully 6to Bft in thickness. This swelling of the lode has now been penetrated and the reef has again shrunk in to its usual dimensions. . In order to exactly locate the position of both the lodes, the manager intends removing the- men from the face of the north-west and push on the sinking of the winze. By having this important work completed good ventilation and the exact position will then be obtained. The No. 1 reef in the Trenton section' still continuas to produce ore of a payable character, and at the present time the men are busily engaged timbering up the level preparatory to stoping on the reef over the level. Westward the split-up portion hi the reef continues to produce high class ore and the same remark applies to the reef eastward of the crosscut. On this side. the lode is more solid and defined, and shows strong gold freely. The country in this.section is of an excellont (liscription for both speedy progress and the existence of gold, Saxon section : Stoping oyer the No. 3 level on the Clarken's leader is; still being continued with the usual amount of success. Altjiongh the general pre is of a very average character and highly payable, I don't think this month's return will come up to the preceding month. For the reason that the usual compliment of picked stone has not come to hand, consequently the return will not be quite so good. It will nevertheless be a highly remunerative one. : BAY OF PLENTY. The Bay of Plenty Times says.—"lt is rather strange to find thatfar more interest i 8 taken in the possible development of the quartz reefs between here and Te Puke, by persons not already materially concerned in the district than by those who have everything at stake herei Nevertheless such is the case and we hope to see prospecting undertaken in a thorough manner when better weather sets in in the spring. It is a pity but that a small syndicate were formed at once locally to employ a firstclass man while so much attention and money is being devoted to gold mining, as if work were once fairly started, there seems little fear but that a remunerative field would be opened."
