ORPHANAGES FOR CHILDREN.

Wellington Oc ■■':•' 17. At a'meeting of tho Bonovolont Trustees leave of absence was granted to Mr Kirk, who is about to visit Australia and promises to look into the methods of affording relief practised there. Tito chairman brought up the question, which had lately been mooted in town, of building an orphanage in Wellington. Ho stated that ho had heard from several quarters that thero was an impression abroad that the Trustees were in the habit of placiug Protestant children with Catholic people and vice versa. This ho emphatically denied. Every caro was taken that tho children should be placed in homos suitable to the religion they had been brought up to. Ho expressed himself strongly against tho introduction of orphanages, as ho know tho evil that, in certain cases, had been brought about by them in the Old Country. Ho contended that tho present system of boarding the children out was more advantageous in every way, as the children were generally provided with good homes, and at the same time worthy people were assisted by the receipt of the board money allowed by tho Trustees. The ladies of tho Christian Association would still exerciso the supervision they had previously exercised over the children who passed through tho Trustees' hands. The grantiug of further relief to a number of cases were dealt with and rations and money for rent allowed. Thero was one particularly distressing case of a young mother with three children, who was absolutely desti-

tute, her husoand, an habitual drunkard, having deserted her. It was decided to afford her reliof for a fortnight on the nriderstanding that she would prosecute her husband.
