' NOTICE OF MOTION GIVEN

Thb half-yearly meeting of the Thames branch of tho Miners' Union was held on Saturday night, and despite tho inclemency of the weather, etc., there wns a fair attendance. Mr W. Lucas (President) occupied tho chair. The minutos of the last meeting having been read and confirmod, the Secretary read the following report: "In imaking our usual half-yearly report wo show a total membership of (iOO. Our financial members number 540, this shows thenumberof our unfinancial members as 60.: We consider this very satisfactory considering the great depression existing in mining throughout this district. The business of the branch at Waihi and Karangahake has been carried on in an energetic and satisfactory manner by the district stewards, and the membership is likely to be further increased in these districts the coming half-year.. Members will notice by our balance-sheet that our accident pay for the last six months has been the heaviest sinco the formation of our Union. This is mainly caused by the number of serious accidents which havo occurred. As will be seen by our Halance-'shcct, there is a sum of £700 at fixed deposit, with a working balance of £120 78 Bd, this being an increase of £58 9s for the half-year. The funeral account shows an increase of £4019s 9d for the half-year. The current account still owing our funeral account £75, which was borrowed to make up the amount lent to Broken Hill."

Balance Sheet.-Tho balauco aheofc showed that the receipts on the general account wore £39414s Id, including £61 3s from W aihi, and £3819s from Kur* angahake; and the expendifcure £274 6s Bd, thus leaving a baianco in tho Bank of £120 7s sd. The funeral account showed receipts £9118s 9d, and exponditure nil; demonstration account receipts £1517s 6d, and expenditure £10 14s 6d, leaving a credit balance of £5 3s. The assets of the Branch wero proved at £912 6s 2d. • The report and balance sheet were adopted. Karangahake Steward.—A sum of five guineas was passed to the Steward at Karangahake for his past services, and: his salary fixed at £10 per annum, for the future. Aid to Prospecting,—A sum of £20 was voted as aid to prospeofcing, pending a subsidy from Government and thej Local Bodies. ■ j Election of Officers. — Saturday i next was Sited as the day on which to hold the half-yoarly eleotion of officers at Waihi and Karangahake, and Monday tho 7th prox. at the Thames.
