CHMSTCHURcn, yesterday. This morning Mr Whiteford, R.M., and Mr Pendor. Inspector of Police, drove to the residence of the mother of Sutherland tho victim of the Sydney murder. The former presented her with a letter from Lord Carrington, oonveying hi& and Lady Caffington's warmest sympathy for her loss of so bravo a son and expressing pride at the man who died in the execution of his duty,

Another leltor from Edward Foßberry, Inspector.general of-Police stated that Sutherland was insured for £250, and promising that having lost life in the courageous discharge of his duty a suitable momorial should be raised to his memory.

Mr Whitoford in submitting the lotter expressed the pleasure he felt at having bucli a duty to perform, while deploring the lobb to tho colony of so valuable a man as Constable Sutherland had boen.
