In tho House of Commons, Sir Stafford Nortbcote said although liussia might blockade and invado Egypt, tho policy of tho Government would bo strict neutrality. There was no reason why we should fight when tho road to India remained untouched.
Mr Gladstone's molion was rejected by 354 to 223.
Sir li. Wolfe's amendment, declaring that tlie House declines to entertain any resolution hampering the Government without indicating an alternative policy, was carried without division.
