MINING MATTERS.

Old Whau TBiBUTE.-Garvey and party completed their crushing at the Moanataiari battery, and the return, notwithstanding the doubts which were entertained regarding its remunerative character, proved to be an excelleefc one. The quantity crushed was 33 tons and a parcel of specimens, and the result of the crushing, after melting at the Bank of Now Zealand, was 117ozs 19dwts. The return has therefore proved to be a satisfactory one for all parties concerned.

Middle Stab Tbibum, — Littlejohn and party, tributers of the Middle Star mine, made a lodgment of 6ozs lldwts gold yesterday, but, although this was the result of a small crushing, it is not, in consequence of the time and work expended, a remunerative yield. Pebbevbbanob.—B. Brown and party, shareholders of the Perseverance claim, Tararu, lodged 13ozs 17dwts gold in the Bank of New Zealand, as the result of a crushing completed for them at tho Missouri battery. The avorago is, we believe, better than that obtained from previous crushings. Buci Avail Tbtbote—Small and party, tributers to the Black Angel Company, completed a trial crushing yesterday, as the result of which they banked lfidwts melted gold. The yield is not satisfactory. Golden Calj\—A crushing for the Golden Calf Company is now iu progress at the Prince Alfred battery. More time has been occupied in getting tho stuff through than was anticipated on account of scarcity of coal iu the first instance, and other causes which contributed to the delay. However, the stuff, which is principally from the winzo sunk on the reef since the new proprietors started operations, is showing up for a good yield, and will probably average 2ozs lo tho ton, •but as it is improbable that the crushing will be completed until the end of next week, it would perhaps be premature to give any definito estimate of tho value of the stuff. A crushing of 20 tons for Devin and party, tributers of a section of tho mine, was completed yesterday at Bull's battery, laraka, and a return of 26ozs gold was obtained,, and another crushing for Patten and party, tributers of another section of the mine, have almost completed a crushing at the same mill, and will have a retorting to-day. Cut of Lokdoh.—ln the bottom cross-cut from tho City of London shaft a lode was met with yesterday which at first sight appeared to bo tho cross lodo

of tho mine. It does not appear, however, that this reef has yet been met with. 11 is true that a lode formation has been met with in the cross-cut that bears a general resemblance to the main reef, but if it contains the main ■ features of tho reef, it does not possess its body, and although it presents most encouraging aspects, it is quite evident that something better is to be found further ahead.
