. . (PBB PBEfIS AGENCY.) <► ' Wellington, Friday. : Yesterday, at Dunedin, Mr McLean and Mr Macandrow had an interview, but nothing was definitely settled. Another, meeting is proposed for to-morrow. Mr McLean also met individual members of the Executive. Mr McLean's endeavour is to obtain the assistance of the Provincial Government to carry on the aflairs of the province as. hitherto, until the election of the County Councils, which, it is hoped, will take place in the middle of December. Mr McLean slates that nothing definite has been done, but a general desire is expressed to facilitate matters so that the publio may not be inconvenienced.

The Sandhurst Fire Brigade have notified their intention of competing at the brigade demonstration. Auckland has intimated a probable intention of competing also. A Gazette published this morning notifies that Thursday next, the 9th instant, being the birthday of H.E.H. the Prince of Wales, will be observed as a public holiday in honour of the occasion, and the departments of the General Government will be closed accordingly, with the exception of the Customs,- Postoffice, Telegraph, and Eailway offices.
