A BET OP £500 ON THE UNION

BEACH PUMP. Difference of opinion having existed for some time between the Auckland dit'ootors of Iho Union Beach Gold Mining Company and the manager of tho mine, whom they support, on the one hand, and the Ooromandel directors on the other, with regard to tho mode of worlriug the mine, and particularly respecting the pumping operations, tho manager has been directly challenged by one of tho local directors, and botween tho two a bet of £800 a.side on the question of tho pumpinu machinery and its action has been proposed. Tho following correspondence will explain the business as it now stands, by which it will be seen that the local director has deposited tho money: - " Ooromandel, October 16,1876. Mr George Hanuey, Union Beach mine: Sir, —Ecforriug back to our conversation yesterday, concerning tho working of pumps under certain conditions, -you were anxious to stake £500 against a like sum staked on my part, upon the following matter being decided for or against me or yourself :-Tho question

for decision is, does a 12-inch plunger cause a greater strain on an ougine in throwing water through, a 20-inch column than a 9-inch columu? I stako my money, the sum herein mentioned, that it requires less power to force water from a pluuger through a 20-inch column than through a 9-inch, You stake your money that this is not so. I have now a marked cheque placed in responsible hands, and I await the announcement that you have dono tho same. We will then appoint mutually between us some competent person, whose decision shall bo considered final.—Yours, &c, Geoege MoLeod. 1 '

Union Beach, Tuesday, 17th October.— Mr George Mcleod: Sir,—l have just received your letter, and hasten to ans'wor it. You stated on Sunday last that "a 12-inch plunger would force water easier through a column of any size larger than a 9-inch columu, even if tho large column was as big as our shaft—the larger so much the better." If this is your opinion still, I will cover your £500, and on hearing from you the authority you wish to choose, will, if I am satisfied with that person, agree to his decision; if not, we shall have to choose our own authorities, with an umpire, if they should not agreo.-I am, &c, Geokge Hanney, per K.S. We understand Mr McLeod intends to accept Mr Hanney's offer in the form the latter has put it in the foregoing letter.— Cross.— We would recommend Mr Hanney to "edge."—Ed.
