MINING MATTERS.

Alotmu Tbibute.—George Downie and party, tributers of a section of the Alburnia mine, completed a small crushing of 251bg of specimens at the Moanataiari battery yesterday, and obtained as the result a very handsome yield of 2<tozs 16dwts 12grs melted gold.

Anx.—lfc was currently reported in town yesterday that an interim retorting had taken place at. the Ajax Company's battory, the result of which amounted to 180ozs gold. This has not been authenticated, but if it proves to be correct the stuff is evidently turning out better than was expected. It is, wo believe, intended to have a general clean up at the battery on Saturday, the result of which, wo presume, will be forwarded to town the same day,

Old "Whau Teibute.—Childerhouse <tnd parly finished ap their crushing at the Moanataiari battery yestorday, and from the 33 tons of stone put through a handsome return of lOlozs melted gold was obtained. It was molted at the National Bank.

Kooky Point.— The crushing for McQuillan and party, shareholders of the llocky Point claim, Karaka, to which we recently alluded, has been completed at the Una battery, after about 9 tons had been put through. The return obtained was 13ozs 2dwts gold.

Oboto Pbinoisss.--There has been litllo stone broken down in the Crown Princess mine since Friday last, but in the meantime a considerable extent of the No, 2 lode has boon stripped, and it 13 intended to resume breaking to-day. On the last occasion a quantity of about lOOlbs of good picked stone came to band, and it is probable that some rich specimens will be found in the present section. It is intended to resume crushing on Monday at tho Una battery, if the water is found to be available.

Cube Company.—So far the crushing for tho Cure Company is making a satisfactory show on the plates at the Tramway battery, although the parcel which was first put through was not by any means considered the best of the parcels. It is probable that before the crushing is completed there will be about 100 tons through the mill, and from this quantity a handsome return is sure to be obtained. A further parcel of nice specimens was obtained yesterday from the junction of the foot-wall vein with the Ked Queen leader.

Queen of the May.—A discovery, which is likely to prove one of very great interest to the Queen of the May Company, took place yesterday. This was the finding of the true hanging-wall reef of the mine. Ifrwill be recollected that a considerable distance back in the drive tho reef became split by a horse, and although they wore carried in one drive as far as possible they still continued to separate; and, as the removal of a great quantity of mullock would bo necessary to pursue this course, it was decided to follow ono section of tho lode, and the fooNwall section was selected as the most promising. Subsequently, when some distance had been driven on the foot-wall lode, it was deeided to cross-cut, in order to ascertain where the foot-wall section was to be found, and, quartz being mot with at a distanco of about 12 feet, it was naturally supposed to be tho hangingwall vein, although it was smaller than was anticipated, and was of a poor quality and unpromising character. However, after opening it for a short distance, a small vein thickly impregnated witli mineral was found branching off nearly at right angles from it, and the manager determined to follow it up and ascertain what it led to. It was in this drive that the true hanging-wall lode was met willi yesterday. It has been driven through and shows a width of two feet of nice looking stone, in which there is a fair show of gold. A fow days' moro work will lend to develop it sufficiently to enable the manager to form an accurate idea of its general worth, but so far the indications are very encouraging. The find may prove to be of more importance than appears at first sight, for in the upper level this section of the lode was not worked at all, and it is extremely probable that it is intact to the surface. In fact, it remains to be proved whether it is not after all the main aectioa of the reef, and some are now inclined to the opinion that such is tho case. Tho distance between the tffo sections of tho lode is about 24 fcot.

Moanataubi,—The lodo to which we referred in yesterday's issue has been cut through, and shows a width of full a foot of quartz of a very promising quality. As we havo already intimated there is a good show of coarse gold apparent in the lode, but there is no present intention of driving on its course. The reason is that the ventilation is hardly sufficient to afford of a diversion until such time as the cross-cut is carried a sufficient length to intersect tho main reef and communicate with the winze, which is sunk on it, but as soon as this is accomplished this reef, which has come to hand so unexpectedly, will be driven upon and openod up. ________
