Chbistohubch, Tuesday. : Another candidate is announced for the Coleridge (Bluett's) district. This makes seven candidates for the samo seat, Mr Josiah Birch, an influential Kaiapoi merchant, is likely.to oppose Mr J. E. Brown for the Ashley district, The Hon Mr Bowen .and his opponent, Mr Beswick, are busy canvassing Kaiapoi._ The election of the former is considered safe.—The Jockey Club have decided to erect an additional, stand on the race course.—Eighteen sets of exhibits have been received for Philadelphia, comprising hams, bacon, preserved meats, tomato sauce, wheat, rye grass seed, malt, barley, beans, oatsj flax, soap, candles, limestone, leather, coloured mats, skins, coal, and cbickory.—The cricket match yesterday between the Christchurch Club and the crew of H.M.S, • Sappho,' resulted in favour of the latter by 5 runs with 4 wickets to go down.—A rifle match yesterday between the Christchurch Cavalry and the crew of the' Sappho,' resulted in favour of the latter by 90 points. The Cavalry were-armed with carbines, and the ' Sappho' 'men with long Sniders. After the match the: two teams changed arms, and fired 5 shots each at 400 yards, when the Cavalry, scored 108, and the 'Sappho' 30 points, thus proving the great superiority of the long Sniders over the. carbines. Timabu, Tuesday.
■Mr, Alexander Wilson, storekeeper, Temuka,- announces himself as a candidate for Geraldine.. The electoral rolls are not yet completed. Now the limits of the . district; are generally known great surprise and disappointment are. ex-, pressed at the old Tipiaru district having been divided by the Opihi without the electors being consulted. The division practically disfranchises a large number of electors liviog in the suburbs ofTimaru and the locality , beyond Timaru and the Opihi. There will probably be a demonstration of feeling on the subject, but the Act is indisputable in its 'terms. • Dunedin, Tuesday.' Grand Stand Handicap': Seamstress, "Wee Lad, Miss Alfred, Petrobe, Peter, Bory O'More, King Philip, Pakeha, Mischief, Kathleen, Steamer, Tadmor, Sonnambula".
