MINING MATTERS.

Cube.—There was a valuable lot of ibout 301bs of specimens and 601bs of ■ioli picked stuff acquired from the stopes >f the No, 5 reef yesterday, and a good ■ieh show of gold was left in the face, rhese stopes are now in close to the Caledonian boundary, and it is evident ibat the rich stone which is now being vorked upon is a continuation of the lame rnn from which the Caledonian •ecently had such a splendid lot of specimens. There is little doubt but.that the, 'un of gold dips out of the Cure into the Caledonian, and this accounts for tho Cure laving it in the higher level when the Caledonian had it on the bottom. The botrwall reef continues to produce good juality crushing stuff, but there have jeen no specimens to hand from it during ;he last few days. In the winzes both .odes have a promising appearance, the !oot-wall lodo especially having greatly improved in size and consistency. It is, a fact, a fine compact lode, averaging about 15 inches in width, and it carries stood gold downwards, so also does the No. 5 reef, and both winzes are now down i considerable portion of the distance towards the new main level which is being driven from the No. 2 level of the Caledonian mine. During the course of the afternoon a further Jot of specimens and picked stuff came to hand from the stopes, making the whole takings for the day 301bs of good specimens, and lOOlb.s of picked stuff, actual weight, Gold was left showing in the. face, and there will probably be'some more stuff of a similar class to hand to-morrow. Manujuit.—The only work in progress in this mine is the driv.ing of the main level along the course of the reef southward, tho intention being to continue that drive up to the slide before starting any other operations. The lode has greatly improved in quality recently. Instead of the disturbed appearance which it has borne, it Jb now. solid and defined, and there is a plentiful supply of promising minerals, but no.gold has yet been visible. There only remains- about 40 feet to drive to reach the slide, and against this there is a-strong .probability of a goo.d rich run. of stone existing. The present work is in tho hands of a contractor. • There is a good lot of stuff accumulated from the drive now, but there is no immediate intention of starting a crushing. Caledonian.—A considerable quantity of the stuff which had been stripped in the drive Blong the course of the Cure reef has now been broken down, but its quality is not nearly so good as that which was comprised iu the previous crushing.' The reef is large and coarse, but it shows a little gold; and there is a likelihood that it will yield a payabla average, but there have been no specimens found in this section of the lode. Crushing will be started immediately. There is nothing new to report from the No. 2 level. The rise has not yet broken through to the Cure level, and it is uncertain whether it is going up on the same lode. AiBUBNiA Teibute,—A small crushing of about 12 tons was finished yesterday for the tributers of tho Alburnia mine at the company's battery, and the yield obtained was a handsome.-one of 36ozs 6dwts 12grs melted gold-. This is the second andbyfaTthe most successful crushing the party has had. The Btuff comprised in both crushings was derived from what is known as the specimen leader, where the party is working ablock of it against the Old Whau boundary. OldWhau.—Yesterday the Alburnia specimen leader was intersected within about 15 feet of the boundary in a cross.cut which was driven for the purpose from the No. 5 level, which corresponds with the adit-level of the Alburnia mine. The lode is a fine compact one, and is 18 inches thick,. 'Tho rich crushings which

the tributers of the Alburnia hare ob'. tained from stuff taken out of the same lode close to the boundary is a good indication of the worth of the lode which has now been opened. . '' Ebd Queen.—lt* has been arranged that crushing for this company is to be oommenced next Monday at the Waiotahi battery. By that time there will be about 50 tons of general crushing stuif on hand, and it. may also be anticipated that a good, addition will be made to the quantity of specimens now la band. There is no particular change to report from the mine. The lode upon ivbich operations are progressing averages Fully a foot in width, and shows gold pretty freely. CoHBAN.-Cruflhftg for the Ooliban ivill be completed to-day at the Moanaaiari battery, but it will hardly be possible to finish cleaning up in time for •etorting e.s the specimens have yet to go trough, and there aro about 2cwt of hose (including picked stuff) to go hrougli, and there is a considerable juantity of blanket-tailings for treatment, should the specimen-stuff turn out well, he yield will bo a brilliant one, for the ;eneral crushing has shown up on the )lates for an excellent average throughiut, and there are strong hopes that a übstantial dividend will accrue to the hareholders out of the proceeds. Long Deive,—So far the stuff which las been sent to the mill whero the crush* 1 ng for this company has been carried on las during the present month' shown up or only a moderate average. But there s ample time yet for improvement, as nore than half the month has to run beore retorting takes place. It often iccurs that during the first part of the nonth's* crushing for this company the irushing stuff is inferior in quality, but t always turns out well in the end. ilready the improvement in the prospects of this month's yield has comnenced, for -yesterday a nice parcel of ipecimens came to hand from one of the nany workings which are being carried >n in this company's mine, Oeown Pbincess,—A nice parcel of JOlbs of specimens and picked stuff came ;o hand yesterday from one of the winzes jn No. 2 reef, and it is encouraging to )bserve that in the No. 3 reef there is ilso a remarkable improvement. Gold ihows freely in-the winze, and sor 61bs )f specimens came to.hand yesterday Vom this, which is only down about eight 'eet. Hitherto gold has been freely risible through the stone, but these are ;he first specimens that'have been met villi since the winze was started. The srushing for this company is showing up or an excellent return. In fact the show it present is quite as rich as when the irushing first'started, and on that occalion it gave promise -of a much higher iverage yield than any previous crushing iver taken out of this mine. » ■ Golden ' Cam. — Crushing for the Golden" Calf commenced at the Tramway lattery yesterday afternoon at' 4 o'clock, rith 12-headof stampers.. The first ileaning up of the plates took place last ivening, and there was a fair show of imalgam, indicating a good payable field.■' •; . - -.i. .
