MINING MATTERS.

Old WHAU.-Eetorting for the Old Wha'u Company took pjace yos'terday, and the result of the fortnight's operations is 93ozs retorted gold. The footwall reef now shows a width of 14 feet of quartz, and tho manager has tosted tho several sections of it carefully. Ho finds that there is. a section of it which is unprofitable, but for a width of 11 feet tho stuff is of good payable quality, and to this portion of it crushing will now be confined.* It is believed that in future tho crushing for tho company will be carried on without interruption, as there is a probability of the supply of firewood necessary for" steam purposes being kept up by, the. present contractors, The great drawback hitherto has been the insufficient supply of firewood available, and for this reason the battery has been at a standstill for lengthened periods, aud as a rule has only been working half time. -

Amebican Eagle, TAiEUA.-In yestorday's issue a paragraph appeared, stating the result of a test crushing from a Tairua claim - at Quint's battery, which yielded an average of 7ozs to the ton. We are. since informed that the stuff crushed was from the American Eagle claim, next the Consolation, Tairua, and that it was brought down by Mr Thomas Eedniond, and crushed for him. ; Qmbit oi? BKAuxr.-The - gold result, wg from the fortnight's crushing for the Queen of Beauty was melted yesterday at the Bank of New Zealand, and reduced to iugots weighing 7060zs lOdwts. The shareholders will meet to-day and declare the usual dividend. It will probably be closo on £200 per share. Calbdonian. -. Some trial crushings from the Caledonian mine aro now going on at the Princo Alfred battery, but these do not include any stuff from the Cure reef; in fact, thoro has been none of. the - stone _ from this ,reef yet broken down in tho company's mine at all, although tho drive on its courso.kas now extouded a long distanco There ia therefore no new feature tore'port. Tho country under the reef is good and the wall is well defined.

Hkd QuBBN.-The gold resulting from the crushing for this company was melted yesterday to a bar weighing 62ozs 6dwts. Bbight Smile. -Tho; repairs to tho steam-pipe having been effected, pumping and crushing hare boon resumed, and everything is once moro in full swing. It is satisfactory that so little time has beenlo3t, and it is to bo hoped that in future thero will be fewer of those accidental stoppages. Watchman's Tbibuie.-A parcel of 12 tons of stouo has been crushed at the Tramway battery for Jury and party, tributers of the Watchman Company who pro operating in the company's old workiogs. Tho yield from tho general stuff was 20ozs gold, and from a small parcel of picked stone treated a return of 4|ozs resulted, making the. total return It is therefore a satisfactory return, the ayerago being rather bettor than 2ozs to the ton. '

Golden Oaif.-Tlio retorting for tho Golden Calf Company, 'which had been postponed from Saturday, took place yesterday at the Herald battory. Tlie yield was 185ozs lOdwls gold. We have not ascertained the exact quantity of stuff treated, but the average is said to bo about tho same as ;that derived from the recent crushing at the Frincp Alfred mill, and if so, it is, although under an ounce to the ton, a good profitable return. Crushing is now suspended, pending the completion of the cro33-cufc which is being driven to the Otago workings for tho purpose of ventilating the mine, for the air is now so light that operations on the reef cannot be continued. •

Britawnia.—Tho promised too of stuff from the Britannia mine, Tairua, or rather a portion of it has been received, and is now being treated, but no means exists of ascertaining so far the. probable worth of tho stuff. We miiy add that two bags of the stuff have not yet arrived, and until these, come, to hand there will bono cleaning up.' They will no doubt be forwarded from Puriri to-day in sufficient time to allow of the. crushing being completed, and the amalgam retorted to-night. Inyebness-Tbibute.—Another crushing for.Lapham and party, tributers of No. 2 section of the Inverness mine was completed yesterday. Tho result is a fair one, of 22oza Bdwta gold. Buck Angel TBißUiE.—Wingato and party, tributers of the Black Angel .Company's mine, have- had a parcel of 30 tons of stone crushed for them at the Tramway battery. It was finished last night, but retorting has been postponed until to-day. The return, we may add, will probably be about qOozs gold. City of London.—We are glad to learn that the prospects of the mine, particularly of the low level, are improving, and during the last few days the. show at tho battery has been most satisfactory, similar to what it Used to be when tho mine was paying dividends from tho previous level. '1 he reef is from 7 to 9 feet thick in the face of the drive towards the Queen of Beauty boundary, and this is much more than was expected, as the lode at the Queen of Beauty end where followed up to this boundary was very much smaller, only about half the size, and tho manager inclines to the opinion that something ■ elae comes into it from the Queen of Beauty ground. The No. 4 reef shows no change. A little gold shows through tho rock regularly, and it has the usual appearance at tho battery.

I Hed White and BinE.—Alargo parcel for tho'fied White and-Bluo Company's tribntetsis now 'being crashed at (he Moanataiari battery, but as. thoro is only five head of stampers running on it it will be. some time yet before a cleaning up takes place. So far as it has gono tho stuff appears to-be worth about an ounce to the ton. : '.. u, .

White Bose.-A parcel of from 30 to 35tonsofstufi is now being crashed for Pearson and party, tributors of the old White Hose olaini, Shellbank Crook, at the Moanataiari battery. • As usual, the general stuff is not making much of a show! lint thero aro some specimens to band which will probably make the yield a satisfactory one.' - . .
