ARRESTS FOR NON-PAYMENT OF EDUCATION RATES.
Of five warrents forwarded to tho Thames for tho arrest of defaulters in tho payment of tho Education llato, against whom judgment had-been obtained some timo ago in Auckland, four wcro executed on Thursday night, and tho defaulters - woro taken to tho stalion-houso at I hort- " land. Without, howevor, waiting to mako their appearanco before tho }iesident Magistrnto yesterday, they promptly paid tho amount and costs, and wero of course immediately liberated. There is another warrant still in the hands of tho police, 'but wo Layo no doubt ho will, when found, also fin'd means to pay the liability. We perceive by our Auckland telegrams, that several arrests hare been made there, and the defaulters havo been sentenced to seven days' imprisonment.
