The Police Court was occupied for severa hours yesterday in the hearing of the case in which Thomas-Edwards wa9 charged with shooting at John Toovey. At the conclusion of the evidence Edwards made a long statement, as to the ci;cumstance3 which bad roused him against Toovey. The unfortunate man had; evidertly brooded over his wrongs till he bad but one thought. He was committed for trial. Yesterday's Cross has the following :—" We understand that his Honor Sir George Grey has. as .Superintendent, accepted, or resolved to aocept, and exercise in this province, the delegated powers of the Governor under the Goldfields Aci. We learn further that the General Government have agreed to make certain advances to enable the Provincial authorities to carry out the work of the district." The following were the passengers from the South by the • PLcebe,'. which arrived at Onehunga on 'Monday:—Mr and Miss Horud, Mrs Carruthers, Mrs Mills, Miss Kingdom, Rev Dr Purchas,' Rev Mr Penny, Messrs furchjb, Penny, Hayraan,' Mattheson, Scott, McNeill, and 12 in the steerage,
