NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. The first rounds of tho Now Plymouth Club championships played on Saturday provided some interesting matches as well as surprises. George Grey, who is always an uncertain quantity, defeated Butcher at tho 19tli after a hard uphill game, whilst A. Smith, who lias been playing a good game of late, went down to T. V. Mackay, after a close match, F. S. Johns, who had drawn A. Bewley, boat tho ex-champion, who has not ot late been getting in much practice, somewhat easily by 3 and 1. On tho play tho junior championship looks very open. Details of tho play are:—
