THEFT OF £240, breaking of shop windows. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, August .23. An official of the company playing at the Opera House placed a bag containing £24oj the night’s takings, on. the piano on the stage on Saturday, Whi.e he was conversing with members of the company and turning his back for a* moment it disappeared. Yesterday a constable noticed two men drinking whisky in a street and money changing hands. Suspecting sly grocr selling, he arrested them and, when searched, £2OO was_ found on Henry Silk, stage mechanic at the Opera House, and £6 on the other. The police were already looking for -Silk, who will be charged with theft. . A serious complaint was made recently of wholesale smashing of plate glass windows, numbers of which were wantonly broken. The latest instance was at the shop of G. Fowlds, mercer, in Manners Street, when a loud crash was heard and a pane worth £6O was found to he smashed. Later J. H. parr, who is luiown in amateur boxing circles, was arrested, the police considering they had evidence against him.
